guide to using its-myworld

Creating a welcome page and ID card

Create a welcome message

A worksheet is available for this page. Use the worksheet in class so that students can prepare their work before going online.

To edit the welcome page, students choose the 'Edit welcome page' option on the left of the page. This takes the students to the template they can use to create their welcome page.

On the welcome page, students can write about themselves and their likes and dislikes. They can also write a message to the world and upload a picture (see below).

Students don't have to complete all the blank fields when they are using the its-myworld templates. The pages are designed so that they will only display the texts that the students have added. This means that students can always return and make additions or changes later.

Teacher's tip! When your students are creating pages at the site, make sure they regularly save their work by choosing the 'Save and continue' option. This will avoid losing any work if there is a sudden power cut or loss of connection.

When the students have completed the task, they select 'Save and view' to see their completed home page.

Create an ID card

An ID photo appears at the top of the menu column on the left. Students can choose a picture to display here or upload a photo of themselves. To do this they need to complete their its-myworld ID card.

Students choose the 'Edit your ID card' option on the left. The students can then complete the card with their information.

If you or the students have access to a digital camera or a scanner, students can upload photographs of themselves to display on the card. This picture is also displayed on all the pages that the students create. To upload a photograph, click on the “change the photo” link and follow the instructions.

If your students don’t have their own pictures, they can choose from one of the archive pictures available. When students are happy with their ID card, they can select “Save”.

Note: All ID card images are 60 pixels wide by 80 pixels high. If you can’t upload a picture of that exact size, try to ensure that the proportions are more or less the same. You can always change the photo if it doesn't look right.
