MA in TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS (by distance)
The Centre for English Language Teaching, Department of Educational Studies, University of York, was the first University in the UK to run this highly specialised and internationally acclaimed distance learning MA in TEYL. The MA in TEYL is a two-year study programme comprising eight multimedia self-study modules, plus participation in an annual Preparatory Course which can be followed face-to-face or online.
The face-to-face Preparatory Course will be delivered three times a year in three different centres - in 2008 the face-to-face courses will be held:
 during July in York, UK
 during November/December in Singapore
In Spring 2009 we are also hoping to start delivery in Vancouver, Canada; please contact us if you would like further details about this.
The online Preparatory Course, starting each February, is available for those unable to attend any of the face-to-face Preparatory Courses.
Study on the programme is carried out by following detailed and supported modules, plus close 1:1 supervisory support by distance. Students are supplied with CD’s of these modules at the beginning of each year of the programme.
Assessment is by way of eight module assignments, some of which require the carrying out of small-scale classroom-based research projects. Emphasis within the programme is on the linking of theory and practice, making extensive use of material from authentic classes. Students can choose to focus on one of the following age groups for individual assignments: 6-11 years, 11-16 years, or 6-16 years.

Norwich Institute for Language Education (NILE)
NILE - the Norwich Institute for Language Education - was established in 1995 by directors with extensive experience of ELT worldwide. It has an Advisory Board which is made up of ELT professionals with international reputations.
The capital of East Anglia and 160 kms from London, Norwich is one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in England. Set in magnificent countryside, it has a university, two cathedrals, a castle, art galleries, museums, cinemas and theatres. A city of tradition, it is also a thriving modern commercial centre with an international airport and excellent transport links with London. NILE has course centres both in the city centre and on the university campus.
NILE was set up as a specialist teacher-development institute, to provide high-quality courses for teachers from all over the world. Since 2000 we have extended our range of work and now cover the following areas:
•Professional development programmes for EL teachers and trainers
•CELTA - Cambridge ESOL Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults
•Modular MA courses for ELT professionals (in collaboration with Leeds Metropolitan University)
•BEC exam preparation courses by arrangement
•International ELT consultancy work
•Short courses, seminars and workshops worldwide
•One-to-one and executive language training
NILE has grown to become the biggest single provider of professional development courses for EL teachers and trainers in Europe. We were the first institute to be accredited by the British Council for the provision of teachers’ courses and all these courses qualify for Comenius funding. We are members of EnglishUK, members of IALC and an official examination centre for Cambridge exams. We are also one of the very few private UK organisations accredited to run courses offering qualifications up to Masters’ level.
Between 1995 and 2006 we have run hundreds of courses for participants from over 60 different countries. These courses have been both of the open-enrolment type, and the closed-group, tailor-made variety, specially designed for education ministries, institutions and companies worldwide. We intend to continue the NILE success story by offering new programmes both to meet and to stimulate new demand.

Founded by the Vikings over 1000 years ago, Limerick is a most interesting and attractive place to spend a couple of weeks. A city of many contrasts, Limerick's recent programme of urban renewal has managed to successfully blend the modern with the historic. It offers many cultural attractions, including cinema, theatre, museums, concerts and a wide variety of sports amenities. In their free time, students can also enjoy the lively atmosphere in traditional pubs, discos and restaurants. Most importantly, the exceptional friendliness of the people ensures that students feel welcome and get maximum benefit from their course.
It would be difficult to imagine a better or more central location from which to explore the many attractions of the West of Ireland. Outstandingly beautiful lakes and hills and the splendour of the Atlantic Ocean are all just a short drive from Limerick. A visit to this vibrant city will ensure a memorable stay for the international student.
During our Summer Programme, a number of free exursions are offered to each course participant such as a walk around Limerick's Historic Centre with a local historian, Noel Curtin and a full-day excursion at the weekend to a place of natural beauty in the vicinity of Limerick.
