Check the information in your fact file with this introduction to the city.

New York City is made up of five boroughs - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island. Only the Bronx is on the mainland while the rest of the city is on a group of islands in New York Bay.

The main island of Manhattan is 13.4 miles (21.5 km) long and 2.3 miles (3.7 km) wide at its widest point. This is where you'll find the city's museums, theaters, hotels, restaurants and famous skyscrapers.

The population of New York City is 8,214,426. Add to that figure the 43.8 million who visit each year and you can understand why New York is one of the most popular and exciting cities in the world.

Most visitors arrive at one of the three airports serving New York City: John F. Kennedy International (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA) and Newark Liberty International (EWR). They can then stay in one of the city's 72,250 hotel rooms and eat in one of the 18,696 restaurants. There's a lot of choice.

Even if you've never been there, you probably feel you know the city through all the films that have been made there. Each year over 250 films are shot in New York City.

One of the city's most popular film locations is the subway system, which consists of 27 different lines, or routes. Each day the subway system carries 4.9 million passengers. The subway is an efficient and safe way to get around the city. If you do experience a problem, call the emergency services on 911.

Another popular form of transport is the famous yellow taxi cab. There are 12,778 licensed taxis in the city. The problem is knowing where to go in the taxi. There's so much to see in New York. Probably the best way to find out where to go is to ask a local.
