Controversial

To coincide with the release of Madonna's new album and her 50th birthday in August 2008, students piece together her life story.

What to do

1. Play hangman with the word controversial. Explain to students that they are going to find out more about something or someone that is often described as being controversial. Divide the class into pairs or small groups and give them copies of the first page of teaching material. Tell them to look at all the words and names on the paper. What do they all have in common? (Answer: Madonna.)

2. Explain that all the words and names are related to Madonna's life. Tell the students that you want them to continue working in pairs/groups and to try and guess how the pieces of the jigsaw fit together. You could check through some language of speculation:
I think it's ...
... could/might be ...
... can't be ...
... must be ...

3. When they have finished, check through their ideas, but don't say if any of their ideas are correct or not.

4. Divide the class into pairs and give each student in the pair one of the information-gap activity sheets (Student A / Student B). Explain how the activity works. Student A looks at the first sentence about Madonna and has to think of the correct question to ask in order to complete the sentence. In this case it's: What's her last name? Student B has all the answers at the bottom of the page. They are jumbled up, so Student B has to find the corresponding answer. Her last name's Ciccone. Student B then asks their first question: What colour are her eyes?

5. Students do the activity. When they have finished, check through the information and clear up any comprehension problems. Then talk about Madonna. Do your students like her? What do they think of her music? Have they ever bought any of her albums? Do they think she should retire at 50?
